Nicole: For someone who has had no real signs or symptons of an unhealthy gut, I was seriously shocked at my results. I honestly thought that they’d come back to me with a perfect score card congratulating me with a virtual trophy, announcing they’d never seen scores like this before! Well, I was oh so wrong! The scary thing is that for someone who doesn’t show any symptons, I have a pretty unhealthy gut.

I have been pretty regular my entire life, maybe a bit too regular and have never limited or had to cut out any food group. I have a sweet tooth of note and will devour anything that resembles chocolate. So no doubt, my eating habits have a very big part to play. But there was one thing that I was forgetting, even though I don’t suffer with bloating or IBS (all the physical signs), the gut is your second brain – it’s all interconnected. So just because I don’t show physical signs, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t rule out the psychological ones. I get stressed very easily and I definitely suffer with anxiety. My memory is appaling and I struggle to comprehend and concentrate on certain tasks. Could this all be linked to my gut health?

So I got reading and came across this article by the Harvard Health Publishing:

The gut–brain connection

The brain has a direct effect on the stomach and intestines. For example, the very thought of eating can release the stomach’s juices before food gets there. This connection goes both ways. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person’s stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression. That’s because the brain and the gastrointestinal (GI) system are intimately connected.”

When reading it now, it’s just so obvious and makes so much sense. I just have to put it to the test. So by simply eating the foods that are on my ‘enjoy’ and ‘superfood’ list, taking the supplements they recommended and avoiding those foods on my ‘no go’ list – I can heal my gut and essentially heal my anxiety, memory and stress levels. So stay tuned – until we do the retest in 3 months time.

Marisa: I have suffered most of my adult life from bloating, IBS and an overall sensitive and irritated gut. My journey to repairing my digestive issues, has been a long and tedious one. From seeing different doctors and specialists, to making diet adjustments and testing various supplements. Although I sometimes found an easy stomach “relief” formula, it was very short-lived. I tried cutting out dairy, limited cruciferous veggies, removed meat from my diet and of course tried eliminating gluten and wheat, but the good old stomach agony would reappear, regularly!

Receiving my Viome results was incredibly informative, but more importantly it was not as scary and hard to make the adjustments as most of the foods on my AVOID list weren’t really my favourites (like peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc) – I was just thankful I could still smash bananas and wheat! Not only was I able to identify the foods that induced my bloating, the Viome app also highlighted the supplements that I could include in my diet to assist in repairing my gut. In a mere four days of using the supplements and avoiding certain foods, my stomach felt less bloated and my gut less inflamed.
