Promoted as ‘the best workout in the world’ their signature hour-long workouts include 25-30 minutes of interval cardio treadmill routines and 25-30 minutes of strength training utilising free weights, resistance bands, medicine balls and other equipment. With their legendary following, including A-list celebs, like Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian – how could we resist?
Being the last class of our NYC fitness adventure, we were fired up and ready to get punished at the notorious Barry’s Bootcamp. We were so excited to finally experience a real hardcore workout that would put our local laid back classes to shame! The concept is brilliant and has been hugely successful, boasting an impressive worldwide following, they’ve made quite a name for themselves. Now it was our turn to put Barry’s to the test and see what the hype was all about. It started off a little rocky – we were pumped up and ready to kick some butt until they informed us that the system was down and we had to step aside and wait. We went from keen beans to scolded toddlers sent to the naughty corner.
Unfortunately things didn’t get any better… there was a little confusion with the treadmills that were allocated to us, so once again we were waiting for someone to give us some direction. When we finally got moving we were mentally prepared for some physical and verbal abuse (which they’re famous for) but a good 30 minutes in we were still waiting for our instructor to scream at us to “PUSH HARDER and RUUUUUUUUN!!!!!!!” We were made to believe that Barry’s was the ultimate hardcore bootcamp experience that left you gasping for air and begging for mercy! Clearly we’re suckers for pain! We finished the class, a little disappointed that we had no battle scares to prove it but equally relieved we were still in one piece.
With that said, our New York City trip was coming to an end and we were a little homesick. We might have had a different perception of the class if we weren’t dreaming of the beach, our doggies and some good old braai vleis. Oh, and in terms of the concept, we still believe our Sweat 1000 classes come out tops – the grass isn’t always greener on the Big Apple side.
This type of exercise will no doubt get you toned and trim – high intensity, explosive and the combo of cardio and weights is the perfect formula to get into shape!
