Make me S.W.E.A.T.
S.W.E.A.T. (a.k.a. Specialised Weight Endurance Aerobic Training) offers clients the ability to have a fun workout in a class environment, irrespective of your fitness level, whilst burning up to 1000 calories per session. S.W.E.A.T.1000 combines interval training with specially designed treadmills, which incline to 30 degrees for maximum results. This is blended with core, functional and resistance floor work as well as high intensity, creative and dynamic routines.
It was refreshing to see that the class wasn’t filled with the typical Cape Town posers that usually frequent these types of classes (well, that excludes us selfie posers). Instead there was a cool mix of genuine people at various fitness levels – all with one common goal in mind. These classes are super effective, especially seeing as we started sweating (from anticipation) the minute we walked into the studio…Oh and you burn up to 1000 calories; in other words you can burn those 15 glasses of wine you smashed in one high intensity session!
We were quickly distracted by the beautiful Claremont branch space, admiring the modern layout and convenience of having a fully equipped health bar, a dining area and clean bathroom facilities at hand. Beginners are given a thorough briefing before the class starts on what to expect and most importantly, how to operate the very intimidating treadmills with the steepest inclines that make you feel like you are running backwards! We were lucky enough to have the legendary Bjorn Steinbach as our coach, with a rep for being one of the best! He’s there to push and motivate you and guaranteed to get you what is promised – S.W.E.A.T.Y! Each class is 60 minutes long, with half the time spent on the treadmills and the other half on the floor. In order to accommodate varying fitness levels you are given three options to choose from: walker, jogger and runner. Your instructor shouts out different speeds and inclines which you can control based on your fitness level. Of course we pushed ourselves to the max and at times felt like we were going to face plant into the treadmill. It’s a little overwhelming trying to listen to instructions, operate the treadmills and try focus on not wiping out, but don’t fear, just sneak a peak at the person next to you (just make sure you don’t choose the treadmill next to Usain Bolt). S.W.E.A.T 1000 is the closest thing we get to clubbing these days – especially when attending their special event classes which host live DJ’s on decks with lasers and disco lights setting the mood.
