Botlierskop Bush Break
Botlierskop Private Game Reserve is situated between the picturesque Outeniqua Mountains and unspoiled beaches of the Indian ocean, in the heart of the Garden Route – only a 4.5-hour drive from Cape Town. This family owned and privately operated garden route game lodge is home to a vast amount of animals including four of the Big 5, rare antelope species and unique bird life.
Following three strenuous months absorbed in the PR world, launching Wellness in the City, training for my first ultra marathon and surviving wedding season… I was desperately dreaming of a city escape with the hubby… off the grid!
I came across Botlierskop when researching scenic holiday spots along the garden route and immediately made a booking after their captivating website images lured me in. I knew that I chose the right destination to escape the city rush and daily demands as soon as we entered the beautiful terrain. We received the warmest welcome and a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival (tick, tick), which we enjoyed on their deck overlooking the estate with rhinos grazing just a couple of meters away.
It is clear that the staff are passionate about the lodge, with the finest attention to detail being evident in everything we experienced, from being transported by golf cart to the spa whilst our bags were dropped at our room, to the personalised letter and delicious port we received on arrival at our luxury tent.
After the serene spa treatment we had time to relax and explore the unique little touches that Botlierskop add to ensure that each of their guests receive the commendable four star treatment – but very worthy of a fifth! The very grand four-poster bed draped in netting and filled with soft white pillows created the perfect romantic boudoir to get you in the mood. But if a romantic getaway is not what you’re after, the King size beds have their advantages too. Their rooms are so beautifully designed, with the outside shower overlooking the wildlife being my favourite feature.
We went on a three-hour game drive experiencing very close encounters with Wildebeest, Mountain Zebra, Eland, Rhinos, Buffalo, Black Impala and Elephants, followed by sundowners overlooking the Giraffes going about in their natural habitat. After our little bush excursion, I thought things couldn’t get any better until we were presented with a three-course meal that was fit for a king. The delicious buffet offered a variety of meat and fish dishes, which the chef personally prepares in front of you to your preference.
After a long peaceful sleep (no alarm clock in sight), we were woken by inquisitive monkeys peaking into our tent. To end off the tranquil experience, we fueled up on a hearty breakfast and enjoyed oysters and champagne before heading back to the city hustle.
Bonus: Yes it is pretty pricey but I would highly recommend staying at Botlierskop (it’s worth every penny). If on a budget, inquire about their off season packages to make the most of your stay. They also offer various activities from tennis and canoeing, to fishing and walking with lions.
