Our Summer Beauty Regime

Now that we’ve both reached the dirty 30’s it’s hard to neglect the fact that age is not on our side and that soon we’ll be referred to as bullets and not bright eyed and bushy tailed. Sad, but true! We’ve finally got to an age where looking after our skin is no longer an option and putting time and effort into our skincare regime is a serious priority. The experts have made it clear that putting in the hard yards now will benefit us in the long run, so we took them up on the challenge to test out some of the most prestigious brands and their product lines, specifically tailored to each of our own individual skin types, namely, Vichy, La Roche Posay and SkinCeuticals.

Our experience:

We love experimenting with new products and skincare regimes, especially because there are so many insanely good products out there that are just waiting for us to slap on. Gone are the days of sticking to one product range, like our Grandmothers, who swore by Oil of Olay, and had a ‘one product for all’ mentality. In short these brands understand the diversity of each individual’s skin type, their needs and expectations and in turn helping you along your journey to achieve perfect skin.

“Every woman has a unique vision for her skin: a skin with a perfect touch, feel, lustre, colour and expressiveness. Individual aspirations that vary with the type and colour of skin, age but also moments and living conditions. Vichy understands this diversity of expectations and needs, and helps you achieve your perfect skin. With personalized care rituals, nutrition counselling and care related to your lifestyle, Vichy allows everyone to reach their ideal skin.”

The routines and products were carefully put together for each of us and were based on the skin care concerns we sent through. We’ve listed some of these concerns below:

  • Pigmentation
  • Hormonal acne – pimples/breakouts
  • Anti-aging
  • Sensitivity

We were asked for the following information for the experts to provide us with the correct products specific to our skin type, skin sensitivity and concerns:

Nicole:
Concerns: Sensitivity, dehydration and anti-aging.
Skin type: Sensitive, pale skin and prone to redness.
Skin sensitivity: Very sensitive and can get allergic reactions from certain products.
Daily skin routine: Cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen and mask at night.

Marisa:
Concerns: Hormonal breakouts, sensitive to high Vit A and anti-ageing.
Skin Type: Olive skin with occasional hormonal breakouts.
Skin sensitivity: Has had previous allergic reactions to products too high in vitamin A.
Daily skin routine: Cleanse, moisturise and sunscreen.

Recommended products for Nicole’s skin type:

Vichy Purete Thermale Radiance mousse cleanser: Cleanses skin from impurities, boosts and reveals skin’s radiance. “Even though I tend to use more creamy cleansers I really liked how this foam cleanser made my skin feel – it was light, fresh and unlike other foam cleansers it didn’t leave my skin feeling dry and tight. I also had no reaction to this cleanser – so thumbs up!”

SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic: A revolutionary daytime antioxidant serum, which delivers advanced environmental protection. It helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by neutralising free radicals induced by UVA, UVB and protecting the skin from Infrared Radiation and harmful ground Ozone. “This is definitely my favourite product. Due to my line of work and always shooting in the sun, this gives me extra protection that no other sunscreen can. Its light, watery consistency allows you to pop on sunscreen, moisturizer or even serum ontop.”

La Roche-Posay Rosaliac AR Intense: This ultra-fresh fluid is an anti-redness serum that resorbs localized redness and prevents its reappearance. “I really like the light texture and the fact that it doesn’t leave a sticky residue like a lot of serums I’ve used in the past. It’s easily absorbent, non-greasy and the smell is neutral but still fresh. It’s perfect for my skin, as it’s prone to redness and gives that calming effect.”

Vichy Idealia Day CreamFor women affected by signs of fatigue, dull and uneven skin tone, visible pores and fine lines. “I found this moisturizer a little more nourishing as it had a thicker consistency, but still easily absorbent. It’s not too oily and perfect to pop on under your foundation.”

Vichy Idealia Skin Sleep: Night care that recreates the visible reparation effects of sleep on the skin.” This cream has a thicker oilier consistency (which I prefer). It leaves your skin feeling nourished after a good night’s rest. I had to avoid the eye area though as it made them water slightly.”

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Comfort SPF 50+: UVB SPF 50+ protection and UVA protection, water resistant, fragrance-free, paraben-free and specifically made for sensitive skin.” I preferred using the sunscreen on my chest, neck and shoulders and only applied a little to my face as it was a bit oily under my foundation. I like the thickness of it and that it doesn’t leave a white residue.”

Nicole’s personal favourite product and why:

Answer: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic

“Yes, this product is pretty pricey, but if there is one product on the market that every single dermatologist, therapist and doctor has ever recommended – it’s this! Anti-ageing of note and protects from free radicals and sun damage. It’s like the mother of all sunscreens and the most potent antioxidant out there. It’s said to provide double the amount of protection against the sun when used together with sunscreen during the day. This is great news for me, as being a model in Cape Town means spending a lot of time in the sun and on locations where shade is pretty scarce. Unfortunately for me, studio work doesn’t exist here, so this is definitely a game changer! I’ve already started saving for my next bottle!”

Recommended products for Marisa’s skin type:

La Roche-Posay Effaclar foaming gel: For oily and sensitive skin. Gently purifies the skin thanks to cleansing agents selected to respect sensitive skin. It eliminates impurities and excess sebum while leaving the skin clean and fresh. “I love the way this cleansing gel leaves my skin feeling super clean and make up free – it literally wipes all the grimy day’s dirt off in a quick wash, hassle free.”

SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age Defense antioxidant serum: An oil-free serum which reduces acne-causing P. acnes bacteria, minimises blotchiness and blemishes, evens skin tone while reducing signs of ageing in non-sensitive oily and combination skins. “My skin isn’t used to rich or anti-aging products as up until now I have kept it pretty basic. So I was surprised that my skin didn’t breakout from this antioxidant serum, although I did feel a tingling sensation in certain areas which the product label does mention – but your skin gets used to it really quickly and I felt the product taking effect quite soon, leaving my spotty areas clear and oil free.”

Vichy Mineral 89: Minéral 89 reinforces skin barrier function, to make skin every day stronger against aggressors like pollution, stress and fatigue. “I haven’t been using this product long enough to truly see the results, but the way it leaves my skin after application in the morning is a true testament that something must be working – I feel super smooth skin and juicy cheeks after every application!”

Vichy Aqualia cream  The range of dynamic hydration that stimulates distribution of water throughout all facial zones. Skin is hydrated in every millimeter to keep a fresh beauty all day long. “This hydrating cream does exactly that – leaves my skin feeling silky smooth and younger – especially after a long day at the office, overdosed on caffeine and surviving on minimal sleep.”

SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion spf 50 UVB SPF 50+ protection and UVA protection, water resistant, fragrance-free, paraben-free. “Nothing beats a good spf! So far this product has been good in that it’s texture is liquidy and easy to apply all over the face and neck, although I do find it a bit too watery and the tint a little fair compared to what I am used to in other tinted SPF’s.”

Marisa’s personal favourite product and why?

Answer: La Roche-Posay Effaclar foaming gel:

“When it comes to beauty products and daily cleansing regimes, I am pretty simple (well, actually, just super lazy!), which is why I prefer products like the La Roche-Posay Effaclar foaming gel which one can apply both in the morning and evening. Due to my active lifestyle and skin being exposed to various conditions from sweaty gym sessions and formal work meetings, to muddy mountain trails and evening snuggles with my dirty pooch, choosing a good cleanser that eliminates all the excess dirt and oils, is very important to me. Although this product works for me and my semi-oily skin, it might be too dry for other skin tones.”
